W.J. Wilson Symposium and Public Address

Elijah Anderson, the William K. Lanman Jr. professor of Sociology at Yale University and a leading urban ethnographer, will receive WSU’s William Julius Wilson Award for the Advancement of Social Justice and will present the featured public address, “The Cosmopolitan Canopy: Race and Civility in Everyday Life,” in the new Elson Floyd Cultural Center during the 2017 William Julius Wilson Symposium.

Anderson’s award-winning publications include Code of the Street: Decency, Violence, and the Moral Life of the Inner City (1999); Streetwise: Race, Class, and Change in an Urban Community (1990); and A Place on the Corner (1978; 2nd ed., 2003). His most recent ethnographic work, The Cosmopolitan Canopy: Race and Civility in Everyday Life, was published by WW Norton in 2011.
