Naked Lunch Break: Why Poets Are Important

About the event

Naked Lunch Break, the literary open mic and reading series brought to you by EWU Libraries and the Riverpoint campus community, kicks off its third season with a dynamic presentation by Kelly Rae Mathews, EWU anthropology and creative writing graduate.

Why are poets important? Mathews will tell you why, and the reasons will surprise you. Her multimedia presentation examines the ways in which performance poets build sustainable community through mentoring, a sense of shared intimacy, rituals of performance, interactive listening, and expression of self. Performance poets have a unique way of expressing themselves that is available to all. The exchange of ideas and sharing of experiences makes for a sustainable and growing community as well as creative entrepreneurship.

Poetry, fiction, and non-fiction open mic readers (3-minute limit) will precede and follow Kelly’s presentation.

Free pizza for all (while it lasts).

Open mic sign-up starts at 11:30am, pizza arrives shortly thereafter, readings start at noon and end when everyone has read or 1:30pm (whichever comes first).

All are welcome. Discretion is advised. Readings are not censored and some material be unsuitable for children.
