Joy to the World: A Global Holiday
The School of Music celebrates the season with its annual Holiday Concert, “Joy to the World: A Global Holiday,” on Saturday, December 2 at 2 p.m. in Bryan Hall Theatre.
Featuring the WSU Madrigal Singers, Treble Choir, Tenor/Bass Choir, Concert Choir and the Symphony Orchestra, the concert will include seasonal favorites and conclude with a selection featuring all of the performing groups. Tickets will be on sale at the door beginning 45 minutes before the concert. Prices are $15 general admission, $10 for students and senior citizens, and free for children 12 and under. This concert is family-friendly and the perfect start to the holiday season!
The WSU Treble Choir, directed by Dr. Dean Luethi, will begin their program with the traditional German carol Kling, Glöckchen, Kling! arranged by Robert Sieving and continue their performance with Norman Luboff’s arrangement of the Spanish Carol A La Nanita Nana. They will finish their performance with the John Rutter’s Candlelight Carol.
The WSU Tenor/Bass Choir, directed by Dr. Luethi, will begin their program with Russel Robinson’s arrangement of Michael Praetorius’ Psalitte. The will close their portion of the concert with the traditional Puerto Rican carol Pastores á Belén arrangement by Emily Crocker and the popular M. Lentovich Ukranian Carol of the Bells arranged by Peter J. Wilhousky.
The WSU Concert Choir, conducted by Dr. Lori Wiest will perform Noel in the African Kituba dialect by Todd Smith and arranged by Brad Holmes, followed by a traditional Canadian carol, Huron Carol, arranged by Sarah Quartel, and the French carol, Noël Nouvelet, arranged by Sofia Söderberg. They will conclude with Here We Come A-Caroling arranged by Josh Sparkman. Pianist for Concert Choir is senior music major Laura Hendrickson.
Following intermission, the Madrigal Singers, performing in English Renaissance costumes and directed by Dr. Wiest, will perform Edwin Fissinger’s light-hearted arrangement of the Welsh tune, Deck the Hall, followed by S’vivon (The Dreidl), a Jewish folk song arranged by Darmon Meader. They will continue with Make We Joy Now In This Fest by Malcolm Archer, In the Bleak Mid-Winter by Gustav Holst, and the ever-popular traditional carol, We Wish You A Merry Christmas.
The WSU Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Danh Pham, will perform Russian Christmas Music arranged by C. McAlister.
The concert will conclude with Christmas Singalong by John Finnegan.
