Guest Recital: Kairos Trio

About the event

Formed in the fall of 2014, the Kairos Trio is the resident reed trio at the University of Northern Iowa. Drs. Amanda McCandless (clarinet), Heather Peyton (oboe), and Cayla Bellamy (bassoon) have since performed together throughout the Midwest, collaborating on both staple trio d’anches repertoire and also new music by composers such Nancy Hill Cobb, Jenni Brandon, and Robbie McCarthy.  Among them, the three have performed in four continents, and as core members with various symphonies and opera companies throughout the United States, including a 2015 trio appearance at the NACWPI National Conference.

As solo artists, each member has a varied and distinguished career.  Dr. McCandless has performed at the International Clarinet Association’s ClarinetFest and the College Music Society National Convention, and her research and CD recording projects focus on works for solo clarinet by women composers.  Dr. Peyton won honorable mention as a finalist in the Gillet-Fox International Oboe Competition, and has appeared as a soloist with twenty ensembles in addition to touring internationally as a part of a contemporary opera company and woodwind quintet.  Dr. Bellamy’s community-centered approaches to music have included founding both her touring bassoon duo Double or Nothing and a regional chapter of the chamber music collective Classical Revolution, and she currently serves as Associate Conductor for the New York Summer School of the Arts.

The Kairos Trio joins together from diverse backgrounds with shared passions for chamber music, new compositions, and reaching a variety of audiences. More information about the performers, as well as a schedule of upcoming events for the Kairos Trio, individual solo artists, and other faculty and students at the University of Northern Iowa School of Music may be found at www.uni.edu/music.
