FROM THE COLLECTION: NEW ACQUISITIONS
EXHIBITION | May 17 – July 1, 2016
Over the last five years, the Museum of Art/WSU has added more than 500 works of art to the permanent collection through generous gifts of the museum’s friends. Now totaling approximately 3500 unique objects, the collection provides a lasting legacy of the 20th and 21st centuries’ visual language. Held and cared for in our community’s trust, the collection is a campus educational resource and foundation for approaching emergent art forms we can only begin to imagine.
From the Collection: New Acquisitions puts on view, in many instances for the first time, selections from collection newcomers. These works have deepened holdings of previously collected artists and serve to introduce new artists to us. The exhibition also serves as a reminder of the generosity of many donors who understand the value of sharing great art with our community.
Recent significant gifts include 35 original works of Northwest art from the Seattle Art Museum, 201 original prints by the contemporary American artist Jim Dine, and 174 prints and photographs by Andy Warhol from the Andy Warhol Foundation. The Museum has received 8 outstanding examples of contemporary art making from the Greg Kucera Gallery and 4 works on paper by the recently deceased artist Rick Bartow from Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art and Froelick Gallery, Portland. Additionally, exceptional donations of artwork have been accepted from individuals, such as Scott Patnode’s gift of 5 American and British works, Jane Orleman’s donation of her late husband Richard C. Elliott’s prints, Patricia Patterson’s donation of prints by Sister Mary Corita Kent, and Sean Elwood’s continued giving—tallying over 300 artworks. It is only through such philanthropy that museum collections grow and our horizons evolve.
