Pullman ArtWalk at the Brelsford WSU Visitor Center

About the event

WSU faculty members Phil Gruen, Robert Krikac, Kathleen Ryan and Carrie Vielle will display their artwork at the Brelsford WSU Visitor Center during the 5th annual Pullman ArtWalk July 14 – July 19. The Pullman ArtWalk is an annual partnership between participating artists and merchants designed to celebrate the fine arts of Whitman and Latah counties.

Phil Gruen is an Assistant Professor and the Interim Director of the School of Design and Construction at Washington State University.  Gruen’s principal research involves American architecture and urbanism. He is particularly interested in the tug-of-war between the marketing of the built environment and its experience in human action and memory—themes he also brings into the classroom, as well as his photography.  Phil’s images are introspective, memory-evoking portraits of how design can impose itself on our natural environment and psyches.

Robert Krikac has been an associate professor in the School of Design and Construction at WSU for the past 16 years.  Prior to that he practiced design in the southwestern U.S. for twenty years.  This practice occurred in a variety of architecture and design firms and gave him exposure to large and small commercial, residential and institutional projects.  His areas of scholarship are in design communication and education, primarily freehand sketching and design studio.

Kathleen Ryan has worked in sustainable design and construction practice for over 30 years. Her projects includespatial and exhibit design for zoo, botanical garden, science center, museum and gallery. She is faculty in the WSU School of Design and Construction working with students on participatory design for projects based in rural communities. Her current projects include the development of an informal learning traveling exhibit for children, where she brings the science of physics, sustainability and design to the rural community. Current rural design projects are in numerous small towns through the Rural Communities Design Initiative at Washington State University.

Carrie Vielle has been drawing and painting her whole life.  She holds a double BA in Fine Art and Art History and a MA in Art History Studies.  Carrie’s work celebrates the human form and its ability to express emotions through body language.  Her unique mixed-media layering technique combines painting, collage and drawing, and has earned her representation in several prestigious galleries throughout the western United States.  Additionally, Carrie has been an instructor for the School of Design and Construction at WSU since 2011.

A formal artist reception from will be held from 5:00pm – 8:00pm July 18 with complimentary refreshments and wine tasting available for $5 per person.
