German poem anchors songs of love and loss

Ross HauckSeattle tenor Ross Hauck will perform in a free, public guest recital at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, in Bryan Hall at Washington State University with local pianist Elena Panchenko.This is rescheduled from a September concert that was canceled.

A reception will follow in the lobby, hosted by the WSU chapter of the Student National Association of Teachers of Singing.

The centerpiece of “Neither Rhyme nor Reason: Songs of love and loss” will be Schumann’s iconic song cycle, “Dichterliebe” or “a poet’s love.” It is one of the most famous works in the rich tradition of German Lieder that set romantic German poems to music, especially during the 19th century.

Other selections will include compositions by Handel, Faure, Guastavino, Ginastera, Manuel de Falla and Fernando Obradors.
